I spent much of this last year (2011) making a documentary called "Captivated" and I wanted to write a song for the closing credits. Things got so busy with the production that I hardly had time to think about it much less work on something. I had recorded a verse and chorus melody with a some of the lyrics months before the completion of the documentary but that was all. I had a deadline to finish the documentary in order to submit it to a film festival and it was the night before the deadline that I took an hour out of my schedule to try to record this song. I was struggling with a cold at the time and wasn't feeling the greatest but I was determined to try. I had a single mic set up in our RV for the purpose of recording narration for the documentary so I grabbed my guitar, a couple of cough drops, and some juice and water and did my best. I recorded several takes, hoping my voice would warm up and eventually got to the point where I began losing my voice so I had to work with what was recorded. I found the best take and sent it that night to my friend Steve Tschoepe who promptly added the percussion, backing vocals, mandolin, bass, and other elements. He sent it back to me an hour later and I was able to send it to our editor to include in the film. There is only one verse and chorus that are repeated. I had hoped to write a second verse but hasn't happened yet.
Pour it Out
This is a simple chorus that I wrote recently. I had played at a coffeehouse one weekend and it occurred to me that it had been a long time since writing any new music and I didn't have something new to share. I prayed and asked the Lord the following Sunday morning to put a new song in my heart and about an hour later I was singing a new song to Him. I introduced it at a coffeehouse the following weekend and the audience was delighted to join in with the chorus. I led the praise time in our church the next morning and introduced the song there as well which connected with the congregation who began to "Pour it Out" to the Lord. (recorded on a Zoom H4 Handy Recorder at home)
Sleeper Arise
The next newest song is from Ezekiel and Ephesians. It was recorded at The Lighthouse Cafe with Steve Tschoepe on djembe and Osvaldo Galaviz Jr. singing along with me.
Whatever I Face Today
This is not only my wife Mary's favorite song right now but has become the favorite of many others who have heard it. This was recorded at home with my friend Steve Tschoepe playing the bass and providing a second vocal part.
Obvious
This is from a well known Bible story, but it can also be your story or my story. Steve also helped with this song at the same time we recorded "Whatever I Face Today". Steve played bass and also sang on this song as well.
La Montana/Alza Tus Ojos
Thanks to some help from my Spanish speaking friends, I have been learning some Spanish praise songs. Now that we are living in the Southwest I felt it would be good to prepare to minister in Spanish. We are starting to study Spanish as a family and I am hoping to learn more songs for outreach purposes.
Osvaldo sang the other vocal part and Steve Tschoepe played a second guitar part on one song and bass on the other song. These is a live recording from The Lighthouse Cafe.
